Repost: Teach Me How to Dream
Reposting this… One of my favorite blogs yet!
One of the most parts about this show is that if you get intrigued by a character, you can do so much more than find some paragraph-long snippet about their history constructed by some writer over lunch. No no… You can actually watch parts of their life unfold right in front of your eyes. And thanks to the wonders of the internet, even epidodes as early as 1980 have clips posted somewhere online.
Tonight I found two clips of Marty Saybrooke and Suede Pruitt (played by David Ledingham) from 1993. Suede was Marty’s boyfriend during the rape… In fact, right before she went to the frathouse and got trashed, she had just fought with Suede. The most romantic facet of their relationship was the fact that Marty was a pianist and Suede a composer… So they could make music together.
The clip below was around the time of the rape, but has a GREAT clip of Marty and Suede together at the piano. Apparently, they were writing a song together called “Teach Me How to Dream” (yeah, the Robbie McAuley song)… It has this feel of real romance, I mean the kind of old-school 90’s romance that I haven’t seen on TV in ages. Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE the show-as is… But putting something like this in would be great… Especially with an old-soul like Marty. Start watching at about 4:07 on the time counter…
Was that not great? And if you didn’t start watching from the beginning, there’s a great scene with the old Todd Manning that’s quite interesting. Below is a clip of the two dancing together to the same song as Suede asks Marty to leave Llanview with him. Again, this completely makes me nostalgic for the nineties. At the end, the conversation goes something like this:
Marty: How about dinner tonight?! Round seven?
Suede: To say goodbye?
Marty: We don’t say goodbyes. We’re going to celebrate!
It’s completely innocent romance… I love it! The clip is about 7 minutes long, but the good stuff starts at 4:45. It’s great if you have time to watch it all!
If the videos weren’t playing, the first clip is here and the second is here.
